What is Microneedling for Acne Scars?
Microneedling Acne
True acne scars appear as indentations and are usually caused by cystic or nodular acne. The good news is that microneedling can help with indented acne scars by stimulating collagen production to plump or fill them out.
In microneedling, tiny, sterilized needles penetrate the skin at depths between 0.5mm and 1mm. By creating these small wounds, the skin is triggered to produce collagen to heal the wounds, including acne and acne scars.
We use a dermaroller that provides visible results after just a single treatment. With subsequent treatments, results are further improved (3-6 treatment sessions are typically recommended; 6-8 treatment sessions are recommended for scarring).
Microneedling for acne scars is suitable for all skin types and scar depths except for clients with a history of keloids.
Here's how microneedling for acne scars works:
Stimulation of Collagen and Elastin Production: The micro-injuries created by the microneedling device trigger the skin's natural wound healing response. As the skin heals, it produces new collagen and elastin fibers, which are essential for maintaining skin elasticity and texture.
Scar Tissue Remodeling: In the case of acne scars, this collagen and elastin production can help remodel and fill in the depressed areas of atrophic scars, making them appear less noticeable. For hypertrophic scars, microneedling can help break down excess collagen and flatten the scar.
Enhanced Absorption of Topical Treatments: Microneedling also enhances the skin's ability to absorb topical skincare products and treatments. This means that serums or creams applied immediately after microneedling can penetrate deeper into the skin, potentially improving their effectiveness.
